NOR-WAY Bussekspress' 30 years
For 30 years, NOR-WAY Bussekspress has been driving on Norwegian roads – to cities, villages, coasts and mountains. We look back on some of the highlights over the years.
It all started on April 1st 1988. The Norwegian version of Greyhound was established under the name NOR-WAY Bussekspress. An express bus service for longer journeys. In the media, the buses were referred to as luxury buses with their adjustable seats, fresh air systems, toilet, individual reading lights, plenty of space and coffee machine. Some routes also had bus hosts serving local specialties on board.
1988–1998 the first period turned out to be a success for NOR-WAY. The adventure started with 22 routes and 250 drivers who drove routes from Mandal in the south to Kirkenes in the north. The network grew during the first 10 years to 45 domestic and 4 international routes. The express bus had become a significant player in the market for journeys over longer distances.
1991–1994 NOR-WAY Bussekspress was central in the planning and implementation of bus transportation for the Olympic Games in 1994. "Transport `94 AS" transported 3.2 million travellers with 2000 rented buses and 2500 drivers.
1998–2003 the network continued to grow.
2002 NOR-WAY Bussekspress had become a strong brand name, as a result of active marketing including the commercial "The egg" that won many awards.
2006 Online tickets. Sørlandsekspressen and Totenekspressen were the first routes to offer online tickets on nor-way.no.
2010 The ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland led to a complete shutdown of the air traffic. Express bus services saved the nation by driving passengers across the country.
2018 Today, as in 1988, the focus is still on buses with high standard and safety on board. We are proud to have so many skilled drivers in our staff. In fact, there are some bus drivers who have been driving for NOR-WAY Bussekspress since the beginning. Nor-way.no has become an important platform for online sales in a digital world. Online ticket sales are increasing and technology can sometimes be put to the test. We learn everyday and do our best to keep up in a market that is constantly evolving.
